You feel tense all the time – even when nothing is happening
Maybe you know this feeling:
You’re sitting on the couch in the evening.
Your child is asleep.
This should be your time to relax.
But your body won’t settle.
Your thoughts keep racing: What do you need to get done tomorrow? What could you quickly take care of RIGHT NOW? But you should rest: What should you do to finally relax…?
The bottom line: You’re mentally awake.
You feel rushed, driven, alert. Even though there isn’t actually a stressful situation going on right now.
And you wonder: Why can’t I just relax?
The answer is: Because your nervous system is still in stress mode.
What your nervous system actually does
Your nervous system has one main job: to keep you safe.
It constantly scans your environment:
- Is everything okay?
- Is there a problem?
- Do I need to react?
This happens automatically.
You don’t consciously control it.
The two main states (simple explanation)
Your body mainly moves between two states:
1. Activation (stress mode)
You feel alert, tense, reactive.
In other words: helpful in dangerous situations, but exhausting in the long run.
Basically, this is not a state that should persist for long in everyday life.
2. Regulation (calm mode)
You feel safe, grounded, present.
This is where your body recharges. This is where genuine connection is formed.
Ideally, there would be a balance between the two.
The problem: Many mothers remain in a constant state of activation.
What constant stress actually looks like
Chronic stress isn’t always loud.
Often it looks like:
- you get irritated quickly
- you feel inner pressure
- you can’t switch off
- small things overwhelm you
- you’re tired, but not relaxed
And this matters: This is not a personal failure.
Why mothers are especially affected
Motherhood often means:
- constant responsibility
- very few real breaks
- high emotional demands
- ongoing mental load
Your system rarely gets signals like: You can relax now.
Instead, it stays in: Stay alert.
The numbers behind it
Studies suggest:
- Around 60% of mothers report feeling constantly stressed
- Many say they can’t truly relax, even when they have time
- A large number experience symptoms of chronic exhaustion
A sad reality: Constant stress has become part of everyday life for many mothers.
Added to this are socially detrimental trends affecting families and single parents, a lack of support from family and the social network, and increasing pressure and costs for parents.
External pressure is mounting: How is one supposed to find peace in this situation?
Why your body doesn’t “switch off”
Here’s the key:
Your nervous system learns through repetition.
If you’ve spent a long time:
- being under pressure
- carrying responsibility
- not getting real rest
your body learns:
→ being active = normal
→ relaxing = unfamiliar
So even in quiet moments, your system stays activated.
Because being a mother doesn’t stop at any front door or anywhere in the world. Many of us live in an environment or a society that doesn’t allow us to relinquish responsibility in certain situations. So our nervous system continues to operate in a constant state of stress.
Why relaxation can feel uncomfortable
You might notice:
- you try to relax, but can’t
- stillness makes you restless
That’s not random.
Relaxation currently feels unfamiliar to your system.
And unfamiliar often feels unsafe.
This is generally nothing unusual and affects many women who grew up in unstable environments or have experienced toxic relationships with their partners. The nervous system remains in a state of alert.
Calm was always just the “calm before the storm” and had nothing to do with genuine, healthy recovery.
What actually helps (without pressure)
Thoughts like, “I need to pull myself together” or “I really need to calm down” are, understandably, not helpful here.
Your nervous system can only learn to experience true calm if it’s allowed to feel it through new experiences.
These new experiences don’t have to be an hour of meditation (which is often not feasible in a mom’s daily life). Rather, they’re the small, regular moments in everyday life that convey to your body: Yes, it’s stressful sometimes, but I’m still safe here.
For example:
- slowing down for a few seconds
- noticing your body
- allowing yourself to not perform
- signaling safety internally
This may seem small.
But this is how change happens.
You are not broken – your system is overloaded
If you feel constantly tense,
it doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong.
It means: your nervous system has been carrying too much for too long.
And now it needs something different.
Not more pressure.
But:
→ safety
→ support
→ regulation
These building blocks are what convey to your nervous system: “I feel secure within myself.”
If you want a structured way to start
If you recognize yourself here
